Updated this week

Softpay supports tipping as part of the payment flow, giving merchants flexibility in how and when the tipping screen is shown to customers.

By default, tipping is disabled if the MCC code does not fall within the hospitality segment. Once enabled, merchants can fully customize the tipping experience to best suit their business needs and customer expectations. MCC is a standard, four‑digit classification used globally across card networks. It is not acquirer specific.

Tipping is enabled automatically for the following MCC codes:

  • 4121 – Taxicabs and Limousines

  • 5812 – Eating Places and Restaurants

  • 5813 – Bars, Cocktail Lounges, Discotheques, Nightclubs, Taverns

Tipping user guide

Automatic activation

Tipping is automatically enabled if the merchant’s MCC (Merchant Category Code) qualifies (for example, restaurants, bars, or hotels).

Configuration in the app

Once tipping is active for your merchant, you can enable and configure it in the app by navigating to:
Menu → Settings → Enable Tipping → Configure Tipping Variants.

Tipping variants

Merchants can choose when the tipping screen appears — either before or after the card is tapped. You can also decide whether the cardholder enters a tip amount directly or updates the total amount including tip.

Default percentages

Up to three default tip percentages can be set, giving cardholders convenient quick options when adding a tip.

High tip threshold

A maximum tip amount (blocking threshold) can be configured to prevent unusually high tips.
